Sterling Raney, 80, a resident of Stark, died Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Chanute Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for 12 days. Sterling Epps Raney was born in Webster Co., Mo., April 3, 1878. When a small boy he came with his family to Taney Co., Mo., where he grew to manhood. He came to Kansas in the early 1900's, and attended schools in Bronson. He worked for the Iola cement plant until 1913 when he moved to a farm in Neosho Co. He retired in 1942.
Mr. Raney was married to Kate Atteberry, June 6, 1906, in Iola. She preceded him in death in April 1943. Survivors of this union include five sons, Glenn and Morris of rural Erie, Kenneth, Chanute; Paul of Joplin, and Bernard of Linwood, Kans.; and 14 grandchildren. Another son, Merle died in October, 1957.
He was married to Mary Stout Garrett in June, 1947. She passed away in June, 1952. Other survivors are four step-daughters, Mrs. Walter Scroggins, Bolivar, Mo., Mrs. Ruth Epperson and Mrs. B.L. Collins, Kansas City; and Mrs. Irene Hadley, California; a step-son, Clyde Garrett, Wheatland, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Lou Middleton, Chanute and Mrs. May McGinnis, Seattle, Wash.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 2:00 p.m. in the Methodist church in Stark. The Rev. J.M. Torrence, pastor of the Erie Federated church officiated. Burial was in the Bethel cemetery with the Erie Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Singers were Mrs. Jewel Elder, Mrs. Lee Kennedy, Arthur Carlson and Bob Williamson. They sang "Beyond the Sunset." Bearers were Don Harding, Wayne Harding, Bill Haddan, Bennett Haddan, Lee Herrin and Wendell Bowyer. Ladies in charge of the flowers were Mrs. Lee Herrin, Mrs. Elvin Richwine, Mrs. Don Harding and Mrs. Ruby Smith.

Mrs. Kate Jane Raney, 57, Stark, died Wednesday afternoon at the Mainstreet hospital in Fort Scott, where she had been a patient since March 1, when she suffered a fractured hip. Last Friday Mrs. Raney suffered a stroke and had been seriously ill since that time. She had been in failing health the past seven years.
Born in Davis Co., Missouri, Dec. 6, 1885, she was married June 6, 1906, to S.E. Raney at Iola. They lived in Humboldt before moving to the Bethel neighborhood about 30 years ago. They had lived in Stark for a number of years.
Survivors are her husband; six sons, Glen(n) of Erie, Kenneth, Stark, Merle, Chanute, Pvt. Morris, Camp Barkeley, Tex., Paul, U.S. navy, Providence, R.I., and Bernard, apprentice seaman, Great Lakes, Ill., and a brother, Clay Attebery, Winfield. A grandson, Larry Paul Raney, Erie, also survives. All of her sons but Paul were here at the time of her death.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kate Raney were held at the Stark Methodist church Saturday afternoon. Rev. Hadly was in charge, assisted by Rev. Alden Pitts, pastor of Friends. Mrs. Neita Mix, Mrs. Ruth Bowles, George Bowles and R.D. Williamson accompanied by Mrs. Lela Myers, sang "We Are Going Down the Valley," and "In the Garden." Mrs. Joe M. Johnson, Fort Scott, sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." The flowers were arranged by Mrs. Lina Boyer, Mrs. Rowena Pitts, and Winnie Stanley. Pallbears were the six sons of the deceased: Glenn, Merle, Morse(Morris), Paul, Kenneth and Bernard. Mrs. Raney is survived by the husband, E.S. Raney, and the six sons, and one grandson. Three of the sons are serving in the armed forces. Interment was in the Bethel cemetery.

Glenn F. Raney, 68, a retired farmer, of Erie, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1976, at the Labette County Medical Center in Parsons following an illness of seven years. His condition had been critical for two weeks.
He was born May 1, 1907 at Gas City, the son of Epps and Kate Raney. He had spent his adult life in the Stark and Erie communities. He attended the Stark schools and graduated in 1925.
He and Esther Fleming were married Feb. 9, 1935, at Lamar, Mo. They had spent all of their married life in the Fairview community northeast of Erie, until Oct., 1975, when they moved to Erie.
Survivors in addition to the wife of the home are two brothers, Morris Raney of Erie, and Paul Raney of Joplin, Mo. Three brothers preceded him in death.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Stark.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Erie Federated Church with the Rev. Norman Rogers officiating.
Mrs. Ruth Rogers, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Laura Watkins, sang "Precious Lord Take My Hand" and "How Great Thou Art."

Kenneth Wayne Raney, 64, of Chanute, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 1974, at Neosho Memorial Hospital.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Raney, he was born June 1, 1910, at Independence.
He served in the Navy in World War II, and was a welder with the State Highway Department for 19 years at Chanute. He attended the Christian Church, was a member of Masonic Lodge AF&AM 103 and was a past master of the Savonburg lodge, member of the VFW, Scottish Ritz, Mirza Temple and Chanute Shrine.
He was married to Dorothy Gilpin Rauhoff on Aug. 24, 1969 at Chanute. She survives of the home.
Other survivors are two sons, Robert D. Raney of Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo, Tex., Gary L. Raney, Redlands, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Merle Toews of Wichita; 13 grandchildren; a stepson, Robert L. Rolen of Houston, Tex. and two step-daughters, Mary Ann Bay of Houston and Mrs. Mike (Vicki) Gurney of Chanute; three brothers, Glenn Raney and Morris (Dutch) Raney, both of rural Erie, and Paul Raney of Joplin.
Two brothers preceded him in death.
The funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Gibson-Koch Chapel with Rev. Dale Snearinger officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.

Morris "Dutch" Raney, 72, 221 West 4th Street, Erie, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 1988, at Labette County Medical Center, Parsons, where he had been admitted earlier in the evening. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
He was born in rural Erie Nov. 3, 1915, a son of S.E. and Kate Atteberry Raney. He spent all his life in the Stark and Erie communities. He graduated from Grant High School at Stark in 1934.
Raney farmed most of his life, moving into Erie from his farm six miles north of Erie, five years ago. He owned and operated the Raney Service Station in Erie from 1968, to 1977. He then drove a bulk truck for Farmer's Co-op of Erie until he retired in Aug. 1981 after suffering a heart attack.
Raney served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre with the 90th Division under General Patton. He received the Eisenhower Citation, the Silver Star, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He was a Methodist, and a member of the Erie Federated Church. He was also a member of the American Legion of Erie, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6976, where he had served as post commander; the American Association of Retired Persons, and the Disabled American Veterans of Chanute.
Raney and Ruth Bohrer were married Sept. 2, 1941 at Oswego. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include three sons, Larry Raney of Overland Park, Rick Raney of Topeka, and Randy Raney of Enid, Okla.; two daughters Nancy Opela of Prague, Okla., and Linda Weidert of Erie; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Erie Federated Church with Rev. Lee Wiersma officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, northeast of Erie.

Paul A. Raney, 61, of Joplin, Mo., died Dec. 15, 1980 in the Cox Medical Center in Springfield, Mo., after an illness of six weeks.
The son of S.E. and Kate Atteberry Raney, he was born June 29, 1919 at Kimball. He attended Kimball and Stark schools and was a graduate of Grant Township Rural High School.
Raney served in the U.S. Navy overseas for four years and received a citation for bravery when his ship, the USS Prairie, was burned.
He was employed by Central Oil Co. in Ethiopia and Panama, and was later employed by Gulf Oil Co., for 18 years.
Raney and Dorothy Chaney were married in 1949. She was killed in an automobile accident in 1971.
In 1978, he married Dorothy Ganstine of Galena. She survives of the home.
Other survivors are: three sons, Terry of Canada, Mike and Max of Joplin, Mo.; a daughter, Peggy Sage of Springfield: seven grandchildren: and one brother, Morris(Dutch) Raney of Erie.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, one son, his parents and four brothers.
Raney was a member of the VFW of Joplin, and the Erie American Legion Post No. 102.

Bernard E. Raney, 49, of Linwood, died Friday, Jan. 11, 1974, at his home of an apparent heart attack.
Raney was born in Kimball, the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Raney, and attended junior college in Chanute. He was a retired clerk for the Union Pacific railroad in Kansas City, Kas., after 22 years of service. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and had resided in the Tonganoxie area for 16 years.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Reno and the Natrona Masonic Lodge in Casper, Wyo.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Bonnie Colvin Raney; a son, Gordon of Tonganoxie; and four brothers, Kenneth Raney of Chanute, Glenn and Morris Raney, rural Erie, and Paul Raney of Joplin, Mo.
Contributions in his name are being accepted by the Heart Association.

MRS. BONNIE RANEY - Mrs. Bonnie Raney, 54, Linwood, Kan., formerly of Kansas City, died Wednesday at a hospital in Leavenworth. She was born in Stark, Kan., and had lived in this area before moving to Tonganoxie in 1958. Mrs. Rainey was a member of the Reno United Methodist Church, Reno, Kan., and the Ladies Aid Society. She leaves a son, Gordon Raney, Tulsa, Okla.; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church; burial in Reno Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 .p.m., Friday at the Quisenberry Chapel, Tonganoxie. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.
Merle Raney passed away Oct. 22, 1957 at his home at 717 South Garfield, Chanute, Kas.
He was 43 years of age. His death was attributed to a heart attack. He hadn't been sick and his death came as a shock to his many friends and relatives.
He was born near Kimball on Feb. 10, 1914. The past ten years he has worked as a mechanic for the State Highway Department.
He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was married to Louise Romine on April 6, 1941, at Arkansas City.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Leland Wayne, and one daughter, Merla Louise, all of the home; his father, S.E. Raney of Stark; five brothers, Glenn and Morris of Erie, Kenneth of Chanute, Paul of Joplin, and Bernard of Kansas City.
The funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the First Methodist church, Chanute. The Rev. Judd Jones officiated and burial was in the Green Lawn Memorial Park.
Active casket bearers were George Blanck, Glen Watt, Guy Rush, George Allen, jr., Russell Corbitt and Joe Jackson.

Goodwin served in Co. "B", Santa Fe Battalion, Missouri Volunteers during the Mexican War under General Winfield Scott. A story about Goodwin's experiences states that on his way out west, his(their) progress was interrupted for several days waiting on a herd of buffalo to pass.
It is believed most of the first family died sometime prior to the end of the Civil War of typhoid or some other affliction.
The family was flooded out by a creek/river while living in Shannon Co., Missouri - they were able to save a mule and the family bible.
The Raney homestead and house is located about 2.25 miles north of Taneyville. Going North through Taneyville on Hwy 76; at the North edge of town, exit left onto county road AA; the Helphrey Cem, where Goodwin and his son William is buried, is on the left (about 1/4 mile North on AA); about 1 mile North of the Cemetery, exit right onto county road AA-20; about 1 mile on the right is the old Raney house (it has 2 floors and was being used as a storage shed in 1991) (a small creek runs alongside the road at this point). The property was described as the N 1/2 of the SW Qtr and the West 1/2 of the SE Qtr of Section 10 R19W T24N.
